Trayvon Martin

On Feb. 26, 2012, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teen, was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman inside a gated community in Sanford, Florida. News of Trayvon's death broached a national conversation about racial profiling and gun violence. After Zimmerman was acquitted on July 13, 2013, advocates against gun violence, including Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, called for lawmakers to re-examine controversial self-defense laws around the U.S. (Photo: Courtesy Trayvon Martin Family)
