Norman Francis

In 1961, Norman Francis, the long-time president of Xavier University in New Orleans, gave Freedom Riders housing in dorms on his campus after their tour bus was bombed in Alabama. When other hosts in New Orleans were afraid of bomb threats, Francis, who was a dean at the university the time, opened his doors to the young activists. (Photo: Michael DeMocker, NOLA.com/TIMES-PICAYUNE /LANDOV)
