Medals of Freedom

For their contributions to American history in literature and beyond, Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou were both recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. President Obama  awarded Angelou in 2011 and Morrison the following year.
