The Government Shuts Down

The federal government entered a shutdown on Oct. 1 after the Senate rejected a Republican bill to delay implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The shutdown proves a major calamity for about 800,000 federal employees who were furloughed and 1.3 million who were required to report for work without knowing when they would be paid. The shutdown lasted 16 days. (Photo: Mark Wilson/Getty Images)
