NY Memorial for Pioneering Black Recording Star

George Washington Johnson, one of the earliest known Black recording artists, was honored with a memorial at the Queens cemetery where he was laid to rest a century ago. Johnson was born into slavery and became famous for the “Laughing Song” in the 1890s.
