Clark Atlanta Mourns Loss of Student - Mr. A&T takes Mr. HBCU crown, plus more HBCU news. — Natelege Whaley (@Natelege_)James Jones Jr., 21, was robbed, shot and killed Monday night by individuals he was buying an iPhone 6 from on Craigslist. Officer David Baldwin told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that it was a set up. Jones was a junior chemistry major who had played football for the university and was a mentor at local schools. Mr. A&T Crowned Mr. HBCU - This past weekend the kings of nine HBCUs competed for the ultimate crown of Mr. HBCU. James Bowen II, 21, Mr. A&T, took the win. “When they called my name, it was a moment of relief and gratification to know that I could win it not only for myself but on behalf of A&T,” he said, according to a press release. Texas College Student Charged With Murder of Transgender Woman - Carlton Ray Champion Jr., 21, a student of Texas College, was charged with first-degree murder of Ty Underwood, a transgender woman, KLTV reports. He is being held on $1 million bond. Champion and Underwood had had sexual relations before the killing, according to investigators. Underwood was shot and killed on Jan. 26. Hampton University to Build a Divine Nine Greek Plaza - Preserving the history of fraternities and sororities is top priority on many HBCU campuses. Hampton University has launched a $1 million fundraising campaign. The money would go to building and maintaining the Divine Nine Greek Plaza on its campus. “Containing nine individual plazas, this magnificent structure will be a special space dedicated to the founders, brothers and sisters of the nine Greek letter organizations and their chapter affiliates,” Hampton’s website states.
