Valerie Jarrett Says Her Family Benefited From HBCUs - Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama, spoke proudly of her father who attended Howard University and Howard Medical School. Her great-grandfather, Robert Robinson Taylor, was an architect and the first Black graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He worked at Tuskegee University to lead the development of the university's design and construction programs."I don't know any graduate of an HBCU who doesn't know their identity and their history," said Jarrett.
