NY Bakery Fined $25,000 for Not Hiring Black Applicant

Jamilah DeCosta, 25, applied for a position at a bakery in Queens, New York, in 2011 and was told by one of the owners, “I can’t hire you because you’re Black.” DeCosta filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission. The business must now pay a $10,000 fine to DeCosta and an additional $15,000 for racial and gender discrimination. (Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)
