Teen Changes Her Name to Avoid Prejudice

Keisha Austin, 19, changed her name to Kylie to avoid being the subject of racist jokes by her peers as one of few bi-racial students in a predominately white area in Kansas City. Students would ask her if she had a “La” or “Sha” in front of her name. Ironically, it was her white mother who gave her the commonly African-American name because she wanted her daughter to be proud of her identity. (Photo: Family Photo via Kansas City Star)
