University President Says He “Failed” Black Students in Hate Crimes Case
San Jose State University President Mohammad Qayoumi says he failed to “intervene earlier to stop the abuse” against a Black student. Three white students have been charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery for tying a metal bicycle lock around the neck of their Black roommate. They also locked him inside his room and hung a Confederate flag in his window. The NAACP of San Jose is calling for higher charges against the attackers.
