SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Authorities say a suspect is in custody after a shootout at a California strip mall that killed two people, including a mother as she protected her toddler, and injured five others.

Sheriff's officials arrested 24-year-old Lonnie Mitchell on Thursday in Southern California. The California Highway Patrol helped deputies capture the suspect, who was found near the Grapevine section of Interstate 5.

Investigators believe Mitchell was one of at least four people who exchanged gunfire inside a Sacramento barber shop Tuesday.
