U.S. Marshals say they were met at the door by an adult woman, who has not been identified, who led them into the house. What they saw next was unbelievable – bodies so badly decomposed, they could not be identified.
D.C. Police officers were quickly called to the scene just before 10 a.m. and began investigating.
"There were no signs of forced entry," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "Because of the state of the bodies found inside, it is going to take us some time to verify the identification of these children and verify the cause and manner of death."
Lanier said the bodies had been at the home for at least two weeks.
Police say they are investigating this case as a homicide. The woman, who led police into the house, was taken into custody for questioning.
