Scientist Loses Gig Over Racist Comments!

Published February 11, 2008

Posted Oct. 19, 2007 – James Watson, the genius geneticist responsible for such theoretic gems as darker skin boosts sex drive and saps intelligence, is being blasted by scientists and scholars who say his latest comments are not only shockingly racist but just plain dumb.

On Wednesday, the 79-year-old chancellor of the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., delivered a rambling interview to The Sunday Times that harkened back to a long list of racial theorists – like British physicist William Shockley, University of Delaware sociologist Linda Gottfredson and Charles Murray and Richard J. Hernstein (authors of “The Bell Curve,” 1994) – whose musings were dismissed largely as unscientific and straight-up racist.

Thursday, Watson, credited with co-discovering the structure of DNA, learned that his sold-out lecture at the Science Museum in London had been canceled and that he was banner news (not the good kind) in the British tabloids.

The comments that caused the stir included: "I am inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa" because "all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours — whereas all the testing says not really." And … that “people who have to deal with Black employees” know that Blacks are not as intelligent.

It’s not the first time that the genius has stumbled over his brainisms.

He once suggested that women should be allowed to abort a child if they learned it would be homosexual. And in 2000, when explaining to an audience at the University of California-Berkeley about the link between skin color and sex drive, he served up this intellectual ditty: "That's why you have Latin lovers. You've never heard of an English lover. Only an English patient." This, from a former Nobel Prize winner?
