Taylor died at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida after being taken there by helicopter when he was shot at least once in the femoral artery in his leg by an unknown apparent intruder at his home.
Taylor reportedly had grabbed a machete he kept for protection at the Miami house and gone to check out a noise when his girlfriend heard gunfire.
After being airlifted to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, he began to show signs of recovery after seven hours of surgery but later died.
“It is with deep regret that a young man had to come to his end so soon,” Taylor’s father, Pedro Taylor, a police chief in nearby Florida City, said in a statement.
Fans and league officials are among those who sent sympathy to Taylor’s family. The NFL announced that he will be remembered at all games played this coming weekend. Taylor was 24 and had a 1-year-old daughter.
