Eve Carson, a 22-year-old senior, was robbed and her sport utility vehicle was stolen, police say. Over the weekend, police released a photo of the suspect in what they believe is Carson ’s automobile, attempting to withdraw money with her ATM card. Now, police say, it appears that a shadowy figure in the back seat of the vehicle is another person.
"We believe there may have been a second person in the vehicle," Chapel Hill , N.C. , Police Chief Brian Curran told The News & Observer of Raleigh. He said that if others were involved in the killing, it could explain how the trigger man got away. The vehicle was discovered around the corner from Carson ’s home in downtown Raleigh.
On Monday evening, Chapel Hill Police released a new photo, above, of a young Black man inside a convenience store that they say appears to be the same man in the ATM surveillance photo released Saturday. Earlier Monday, police said they were working to enhance the first set of photos that were released.
Meanwhile, in a separate murder case involving a 20-year-old Auburn University student, the mother of the suspect wept as she apologized to the family of the victim, 18-year-old Lauren Burk. "I am sorry that Courtney did that. ... First let me say I'm sorry to the Burk family for Courtney taking, taking their child. ... My heart goes out to her family," said Catherine Williams, the mother of suspect Courtney Larrell Lockhart.
She made her plea in an interview with Columbus , Ga. , television station WTVM. Both Burk and Carson are from Georgia . Williams said her son, an Iraq war veteran who is charged with capital murder and abduction, did not confess to her.
Lockhart, 23, was arrested Friday in Phenix City, Ala. Police say that Lockhart also robbed and carjacked an elderly woman at a Wal-Mart in Newnan, about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta, on Friday morning.
