Mom Arrested for Exorcism Attempt on Son

A Georgia woman is in jail after authorities accused her of trying to perform an exorcism on her 15-year-old son.

Sandra Alfred, 46, was arrested Friday on charges of false imprisonment and cruelty to children. Police in Gwinnett County  say she used handcuffs to restrain her son and withheld food for three days while attempting the exorcism.

Family friend Larry Powell, of Lilburn, was also arrested and charged with cruelty to children.

According to Lilburn Police Department spokesman Det. Matthew Lake, Alfred or Powell called police to report an “unruly juvenile” on June 10, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. An investigation revealed that the teen had been held against his will, Lake said.

The teen was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where he was treated for injuries and dehydration and later released, Lake said.

The officer who applied for the arrest warrants noted that Alfred may suffer from schizophrenia and delusions.

Alfred and Powell are being held without bond and both are scheduled to return to court June 26.
