Hillary Clinton Meets With Nelson Mandela

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't want to break the link with anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

Clinton clasped hands with South Africa's first black president Friday in Johannesburg. When the shutters stopped clicking, she joked she didn't want to release his hands, and the 91-year-old Mandela responded with a smile and a thumbs up.

The two met privately for 30 minutes. Clinton, accompanied by Mandela's wife Graca Machel, also toured a collection of documents and photos from his life.

Clinton said the careful notes Mandela had made revealed the "discipline that he brought to a life filled with so many great achievements."

South Africa was the second stop on Clinton's seven-nation African tour.
