Annual CBC Conference: What to Do

The Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus runs from Wednesday, September 23 until Saturday, September 26.

The four-day event will feature thousands of elected officials, business and industry leaders, celebrities, media, emerging leaders and everyday Americans.

The conference includes more than 70 workshops, seminars and information forums on relevant topics that capture and portray the concerns of African Americans. Participants of the program will discuss a range of challenges facing underserved populations including health care, economic success and failures, and global and domestic security. Participants also will highlight successes and provide critical information that will help to build strong communities, organizations and individual families.

NFL star Terrell Owens is hosting an event at Love Nightclub, located at 1350 Okie Street, NE, Washington D.C. The affair, which is invitation-only and is closed to the public, will also feature radio host Tom Joyner, elected officials and live performances. Doors open at 8 p.m.

In honor of CBC weekend, Layla Lounge is welcoming conference attendees as well as “staffers, graduates, professionals, Greeks and jet setters” to the venue located at 501 Morse Street NE. Doors open at 10 p.m. and there will be complimentary admission before 11 p.m. with an RSVP.

A reception will be held to honor Rep. Kendrick Meek, Chair Congressional  Black Caucus Foundation from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Washington Convention Center.

 

Saturday, September 26

This morning the CBC will have a prayer breakfast, featuring a special appearance by Grammy-winning gospel music artist, Yolanda Adams, at the Washington Convention center. Doors open at 7:00 a.m.

From 12:00 p.m-4:00 p.m., Tabaq Bistro, located at 1336 U St NW, will host the 1st Inaugural CBC Weekend Hip Hop Brunch – The Iconic Day Time Affair. The event, hosted by Michael McQuerry, Kelechi Kalu, Rob “DJ Blaze” Williams and The Greeks on the Hill, has a $10 admission and will feature food, entertainment and networking.

The New York Delegation party will be held at Hall of the Americas at the Organization of American States, 17th and Constitution Avenues NW.  U.S. Representatives Edolphus Towns, Gregory Meeks, Charlie Rangel and Yvette Clark are hosting the event beginning at 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson arnd his wife Marcia Dyson will host a fundaiser for Haiti at their Georgetown home, located at 5015 Warren Street N.W., from 1 PM to 4 PM. Contribution levels are $250 for supporters; $500 for VIPs and $1000 for Chairs. Cost for students is and non-profit workers is $100.

Music producer Wyclef Jean, in collaboration with the Hip Hop Caucus, is hosting a "Green the Block" party at Lux Lounge, 649 New York Avenue N.W. Special guests include Hill Harper and Vivica Fox. Event starts at 9 PM.

A special screening will be held for "Believe: The Barack Obama Story" at the Washington Convention Center at 2 PM in RM 47 B. Admission is limited.

Tuscana Lounge is hosting "an exclusive affair" celebrating and TV One and CNN's Roland Martin and DJ Biz Markie at Tuscana Lounge at 1350 Eye St. N.W. from 10 PM to 3 PM. RSVP a rsvp@therichmondgroup.com.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) has announced President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are scheduled to attend the Annual Phoenix Awards Dinner this evening as part of the 2009 Annual Legislative Conference. President Obama is scheduled to address more than 3,000 expected attendees at the evening's event.

 

Sunday, September 27

Its an unofficial event, but the Grand Finale party will be held at Josephine's, 1008 Vermont Avenue N.W. beginning at 10 p.m. It is free until 11 PM and there will be a complimentary champagne toast. The event is also being billed as a "Redskins game after-party.
