Friend Explains Sammy Sosa’s Bleached Skin

Published December 3, 2009

Former Major League slugger Sammy Sosa wants everybody to know that there’s nothing wrong with his skin – or his mind – despite recent pictures of him circulating the Internet with apparently bleached skin.

"He's not trying to be Michael Jackson," said Rebecca Polihronis, a former Cubs employee, who talks often with Sosa. "He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin. Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double."

According to USA Today, Sammy Sosa pictures" and "Sammy Sosa bleached skin" have been two of Google's most searched terms over the past day or so.

Most people are used to seeing a chocolate-skinned version of the Latino from the Dominican Republic, so the pale-faced version on display at the Latin Grammy Awards last week in Las Vegas had folks stunned.

Sosa underwent the procedure because his skin had been exposed to too much sun after years of playing in the sun, Polihronis said.
