Sports stars are definitely quirky. First you have one athlete that is the ultimate social networking narcissist, spreading his brand of copious self love through apps, channels, videos, and updates. Now comes the polar opposite. Washington Wizards’ point guard Gilbert Arenas, has vowed that he will not use Twitter until he reaches one million followers (cue the cricket chorus).
True to his word, the player that has dubbed himself “Agent Zero” has yet to let out nary a tweet on his twitter feed. If you weren’t aware, the usual way of gaining followers is by interacting with the Twitter community using the 140-characters allotted per tweet. But Arenas wants to go straight at the fork in the road and do things his way. The funny thing is, if he were a little more famous like say LeBron James or Dwanye Wade the goal would probably have been achieved already. I mean remember how fast Oprah got followers when the word got out that she was joining Twitter. I mean is anybody checking for the Wizards like that?
As crazy as this sounds, the ploy might actually work. If he can take the movement viral, maybe get a few diehard fans to start a “1,000,000 follower march” on his behalf, we could be treated to Agent Zero’s first tweets. Currently Arenas is at 6,467 followers. You have to wonder what that first update will say. Also, if he gets the million, will the Agent Zero bobblehead get an account next?
