An award-winning multi-media journalist, television commentator, media consultant, professor and author, Roy S. Johnson is VP/ Editor-in-Chief of Men’s Fitness magazine and MensFitness.com, the nation’s premier fitness publication and Web site for men. He joined MF in May 2007.
While at Men’s Fitness, Johnson has led the magazine and Web site to monumental growth, helping to increase its profile by working with notables such as Tiger Woods, Jaime Foxx, Reggie Bush and more. He was also responsible for overseeing the development of American Media special projects such as the Get Fit, Stay Fit 2009 Guide and America’s Hope: Barack Obama How He will Change Our World.
When not at Men’s Fitness, Johnson is a featured blogger on Yahoo! Sports and a regular on-air contributor on SportsNet NY. As well, Johnson is often asked by major networks to comment on major sports issues and events.
Johnson has co-authored books with Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Charles Barkley and former Dallas Mavericks coach – and NBA Coach of the Year - Avery Johnson, whose collaboration – “Aspire Higher” (Harper Collins) - was published in March, 2008.
On “Ballers, Games and Scoundrels,” his sports blog (www.passtheword.wordpress.com) Johnson offers embolden insights on sports personalities events, issues and controversies.
As a consultant, Johnson’s firm, RSJ Media Solutions, conducts media training and helps media clients create and implement strategies to produce high-quality magazine, digital and television products.
He has written for numerous magazines and taught sports journalism as an adjunct assistant professor at Hofstra University (Long Island, NY), and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
Prior to joining MF, Johnson was an Assistant Managing Editor at SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, where he had editorial oversight of branded television, radio and broadband programming, new business projects and special events. He developed several television and radio projects, including the “SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Sportsman of the Year” show (FOX), the “SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Swimsuit Model Search” (NBC); the SI NFL Preview Show” (SpikeTV); and “SI Monday Night Live,” (radio syndication, Westwood One). Before this, he also held senior editorial positions at Fortune, Money, and Savoy, where he was founding editor in chief.
He previously covered sports for The New York Times and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and was Editorial Director at Vanguarde Media.
His community efforts include serving as a Trustee at the Bethesda Baptist Church of New Rochelle, and President of the Westchester Clubmen (which supports the Higher Aims after-school program for middle- and high-school African-American boys.) He has served as a board member of the Stanford University Alumni Association and is a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
