Money for Schools - The president spoke at an America’s Promise Alliance Education event in D.C. Monday morning. The alliance was founded by former Secretary of State General Colin Powell and his wife, Alliance Chair Alma Powell. During his remarks, Obama announced a plan to offer $900 million in grants to states and districts that turn around schools that are low performing. The president also talked about different ways to get students prepared for life after high school, which could include college or a career.

White House Meetings - On Thursday and Friday the president will attend meeting at the White House.

Monday’s Meetings - Monday afternoon, Obama will have meetings with Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in the Oval Office.

Still on Main Street - Obama will continue his tour across the United States with stops in Missouri and Illinois on Wednesday. First, early in the afternoon, he’ll tour Poet Biorefining in Macon, Mo. and talk to workers. Afterward he’ll visit a local farm and speak to the family that owns the farm. Later in the day, Obama will speak at the Oakley Lindsay Civic Center in Quincy, Ill. He’ll return to D.C. that night.

Main Street Tour - The president will continue his White House to Main Street Tour, Tuesday, with a stop in Savannah, Ga. While in the Peach State, Obama will meet with workers, small business owners and local leaders about their struggles with the economy. He’ll also discuss ways the government can work with them to bring the economy back.

Thursday - President Obama will have meetings at the White House.

Over the Weekend… - Obama is in excellent general health and fit for duty, according to the White House physician who gave the president his physical at the National Naval Medical Center this weekend. Health Care - After last week’s 7 hour plus bi-partisan summit, President Obama is set to announce his administration’s next steps with regard to health care by mid-week, according to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. Gibbs didn’t give any clues as to what Obama might say.

The White House says the event demonstrates the President Obama’s appreciation for the role HBCUs played in our history as well as his commitment to assisting the institutions.
