Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Florida) is no fan of hip hop, but he’s not hating on former rapper Luther Campbell’s bid to become the next mayor of Miami-Dade County, following a recall by voters of current Mayor Carlos Alvarez.

The Florida Democrat admitted that he knew nothing about Campbell’s potential rivals, and that he didn’t even know the former lead rapper of 2 Live Crew had thrown his hat in the race until told so by reporters Tuesday night. But he also said that Campbell has done a lot for the community and has been very supportive of students at the University of Miami. If he can motivate people who like his style of music to register to vote and participate in the political process, Hastings said, that would be a good thing.

“Never play people cheap. People said Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn’t be governor of California and Ronald Reagan couldn’t be president, so I don’t take actors and entertainers lightly,” Hastings said. “Different ones of them do well, some don’t. Luther is alright with me.”
