Michele Bachmann Jokes Recent Disasters Are Messages From God

Bachmann jokes that the natural disasters were God's way of telling Washington lawmakers to listen to the American people.

Michele Bachmann has always said she has a special relationship with God. During a weekend rally in Florida, the Minnesota lawmaker said that the Almighty created last week’s earthquake and Hurricane Irene to send a message to Washington politicians.

"I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane,” she said. “He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. Because they know what needs to be done.’”

Bachmann also said that the American public knows that “government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending."

According to a Bachmann spokesperson, she was using humor to make a point. She might want to use another metaphor because some people thought she might be very serious. Bachmann has previously said that God told her to go to law school, run for Congress and enter the GOP’s 2012 presidential race. So why would anyone take her seriously?
