Johnson faces seven years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Former Prince George’s County executive Jack B. Johnson, who will forever be remembered as that dude who directed his wife to flush a check down the toilet and stuff thousands of dollars in cash in her bra as FBI agents banged on the front door, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison on Tuesday. Johnson, who pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges in May, must also pay a $100,000 fine and undergo alcohol treatment, The Baltimore Sun reports. His wife, Leslie Johnson, a former Prince George’s County council member, pleaded guilty to evidence tampering and will receive her sentence on Dec. 9.
“In my wildest dream, I could not imagine being in a place like this,” Johnson said at his sentencing hearing. “I’ve lost everything. My reputation and all of the things I’ve worked for.”
According to the Sun, Johnson’s sentence is the stiffest to be given for a political corruption case in Maryland in decades. It was initially harsher, but was reduced from 108 months based on Johnson’s cooperation.
Talking Points Memo reports that Johnson’s attorneys had asked for a lighter sentence because, they said, their client suffers from Parkinsonism, alcoholism, depression and anxiety and speech disorders. Those claims were refuted, however, by FBI surveillance photos depicting Johnson not only playing golf last summer, but also carrying his heavy golf bag.
"The message must be sent that if you engage in the pay-to-play culture, you will not escape the scrutiny of law enforcement, and you will go to jail," said Assistant U.S Attorney James Crowell III.
