Allen West compares democrats to Nazi propagandist

Rep. Allen West (R-Florida) may be the record holder for the congressional lawmaker who makes the most offensive remarks in a session. The latest comment he’s being called out on was made Thursday when he likened the Democratic Party’s messaging to Nazi Germany’s propaganda machine in response to a new Pew Research Center poll that found Americans blame Republicans more than Democrats for being a “do-nothing Congress.”

“If Joseph Goebbels was around, he’d be very proud of the Democratic Party, because they have an incredible propaganda machine,” West said. “Let’s be honest, you know, some of the people in the media are complicit with this and enabling them to get that type of message out.”

Goebbels was Adolf Hitler’s minister of propaganda from 1933 to 1945 and organized many of the attacks on Jews and programs to psychologically induce hatred toward them.

The comment led veteran lawmaker, Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) to send a handwritten rebuke to West, obtained by Politico, in which he pointed out that Goebbels was a “vicious notorious anti-Semite” and begged West to “help raise the level of congressional discourse” so members can engage in vigorous debate without resorting to personal attacks.

West, of course, blamed the media in advance for how people would respond to his remarks.

“Once again, you guys will take whatever I say and you will spin it to try to demonize me or demagogue me,” West said, adding, “I’ll be prepared to wake up tomorrow and you guys make up some crazy story. Whatever.”
