BET Wire: Activist Arrested for Handing Out Voting Rights Leaflets
Are You Registered to Vote?
Labor Day may be a national holiday but North Carolina's Moral Monday protesters were hard at work on Sept. 1. LGBT activist and former state senate candidate Ty Turner was cuffed and arrested for handing out voting rights leaflets that day, ThinkProgress reports. They didn't take him directly to jail, however, even though the Mecklenburg County jail was just a few blocks away. "Take this incident and turn it into power. Anyone who says they’re upset about this profiling of Black men, ask them if they’re registered to vote,” Rev. William Barber told a crowd awaiting Turner's release. "That’s how we change this system."
