Retired baseball star Manny Ramirez made his first court appearance Tuesday after being arrested for a domestic dispute Monday night in Weston, Florida. His bail was set at $2,500 Tuesday morning on the domestic battery charge.

Juliana Ramirez, Ramirez's 32-year-old wife, told Broward County authorities that her husband hit her in the face with his hand during a disagreement while they were in bed during the afternoon. The former Boston Red Sox World Series MVP denied hitting his wife and insisted that he grabbed her shoulders during their altercation, which contributed to her hitting her head against their bed, according to his arrest report.

The Ramirez couple turned away emergency medical attention when deputies reached their Florida home.

Ramirez retired from baseball in April rather than face a 100-game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, a surprising turn of events that shocked the sports world.
