Veteran forward Shane Battier says he wants to end his NBA career playing for a winner.
He apparently believes that can happen for him with the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat. Battier confirmed Thursday he is indeed joining LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in their quest to push the Heat over the top for the NBA title, the Associated Press reports.
Battier, a free agent, says he only wants a “winning role” at this stage of his career, which has been split between Memphis and Houston.
“Over the last week, I’ve played out every scenario in my head over and over,” Battier posted on Twitter. “It always came back to one thing for me: a winning role.”
While the Heat still need to tighten up its point guard situation, landing Battier gives them a forward that is versatile enough to guard both forward and guard positions. Battier, a former Duke standout, is also a decent outside shooter, which should open things up more for the Big Three on the block.
James has already welcomed Battier.
“Happy and excited to have u (a part) of the Heat,” James wrote to Battier on Twitter.
NBA teams have been free to negotiate with free agents but cannot comment or confirm any free agent acquisitions until Friday.
