NFL Draft Prospects Wanted for Questioning in Nightclub Fight

Victor Hampton and Kelcy Quarles were allegedly connected to brawl that left promoter badly injured.

Three former University of South Carolina football players had an eventful night in New York City while visiting for a draft-related photo shoot with ESPN. According to the New York Daily News, 2014 NFL Draft prospects Victor Hampton (photo on the right) and Kelcy Quarles are wanted for questioning after the assault of 28-year-old club promoter named Michael Haver last Friday (April 11). A third Gamecock, Chaz Sutton, was stabbed 50 minutes later after leaving the same nightclub. Police do not think the two incidents are related.

Hampton, a standout cornerback, and Quarles, a highly touted defensive tackle, were at the Greenhouse nightclub in downtown Manhattan when Brooklyn-native Haver was attacked with a hookah water pipe. Haver was then beaten severely by two unidentified men. He would later require surgery at Metropolitan Hospital Center to repair damage to his face.

Investigators have not named suspects in the beating, but want to speak to Hampton and Quarles as potential witnesses. Almost an hour after Haver was attacked, Sutton was stabbed in the left shoulder after leaving the club. Sutton was not seriously injured and police do not think the stabbing was connected to the fight in Greenhouse.

The 24-year-old Sutton is a 6-foot-5-inch, 283-pound defensive end who's pursuing a pro career but will not be in this year’s draft. Quarles, who is 6-foot-3-inches and weighs 297 pounds, is projected to go in the second or third round of the draft. Hampton, a 5-foot-9-inch, 197-pound speed demon, could also go in the first three rounds if he can overcome teams’ concerns about his character.

“[Hampton’s] character will require careful evaluation,” says the NFL’s official scouting website. “[He] has been troubled by a number of off-field issues dating back to high school, when he attended four different schools; Has had issues with anger management, emotional outbursts and team suspensions.”

The 2014 NFL draft will begin in primetime on May 8 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The second and third rounds will be held on Friday, May 9. Rounds 4-7 will be held Saturday, May 10.
