Adrian Peterson Suspended for Rest of 2014 Season

Vikings rusher will not be reinstated following child abuse case.

The NFL has ruled — Adrian Peterson will not return this season.

The league suspended the Minnesota Vikings running back Tuesday morning for the remainder of the 2014 season without pay, as reported by ESPN, for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy stemming from his child abuse case. Peterson will not be considered for reinstatement before April 15, 2015. Already, the NFL Players Association announced that it will appeal the suspension.

Tuesday's news comes two weeks after Peterson accepted a plea deal of misdemeanor reckless assault of his four-year-old son, avoiding a felony child abuse conviction and possible jail time. He was ordered to probation and a reported 80 hours of community service with a $2,000 fine, setting up his possible return to the Vikings this season. But Tuesday's decision denied that.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has also mandated that Peterson undergoes treatment and counseling to be reinstated.

"We are prepared to put in place a program that can help you to succeed, but no program can succeed without your genuine and continuing engagement," Goodell wrote in a letter to Peterson, according to ESPN. "You must commit yourself to your counseling and rehabilitative effort, properly care for your children, and have no further violations of law or league policy."

The NFLPA can still hope that a neutral arbitrator oversees the impending appeal.
