Michael Sam Signs With Canadian Football League Team

Montreal Alouettes give defensive end a shot to compete.

Michael Sam might want to knock the NFL off his Twitter handle.

After failed attempts to land and stick with a team in the league, the defensive end tweeted from his official @MichaelSamNFL account Friday announcing that he has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

“Very excited and proud to be joining @MTLAlouettes! Cannot wait to get back on the field and bring a Grey Cup to #Montreal!" Sam tweeted.

Alouettes general manager Jim Popp is happy to have him.

"With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today," Popp told TMZ Sports. "Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team."

Last May, Sam made history by becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, as he was tabbed by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft. However, by late August of last year, the Rams had released Sam. Still, the defensive end wound up getting a chance from the Dallas Cowboys, but they cut him too.

Sam then appeared as a contestant on ABC's Dancing With the Stars while trying to keep his football dreams alive. He participated in the NFL's veteran combine this past March, but still didn't get an opportunity. By December, Sam was telling media outlets that he doesn't think he has gotten a shot in the NFL because he's gay. Detractors responded by saying he's just not good enough.

Still, when it was all said and done, Sam is playing professional football and fulfilling his dreams.
