Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver Damond Powell Jr. was shot outside his Ohio home on Friday evening, and remained hospitalized for a gunshot wound, team officials confirmed.

The 22-year-old faced shots fired from a car while he was sitting with some friends in another car on the driveway of his house, Toledo police said. Witnesses reported seeing three men wearing masks in a gold-colored vehicle. Staff at the hospital where Powell is being treated had no updates on his condition, but police did say the injury is not life-threatening.

“We have been in communication with [Powell's] family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide,” team spokesman Mark Dalton said in an email. “We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.”

The Cardinals are scheduled to report for training camp this week, and hold their first practice Saturday.

Powell was signed this year as a free agent after two years at the University of Iowa. The Toledo native was the star football and basketball player at his high school.
