Serena Beats Venus, Advances to US Open Semi-Finals

The Williams sisters face off on the court again.

Serena Williams is arguably the greatest female athlete of this (or any) generation, but her greatest competition comes from the woman with whom she shares DNA. Serena won the much-hyped match against her sister Venus Williams at the U.S. Open on Tuesday, and is now just two matches away from a Grand Slam.

The Williams sisters faced off in New York for the first time since 2008, and Venus was the biggest obstacle keeping Serena away from winning all four majors in a calendar year, not done in tennis since 1988.
“It’s a really great moment," Serena said on court after the win. "[Venus] is the toughest player I’ve ever played in my life and the best person I know. It’s going against your best friend and going against the greatest competitor in women’s tennis.”

Tuesday's match was as hyped as they get: stars including Oprah Winfrey, Donald Trump, Billie Jean King and more watched as the sisters went toe-to-toe. The win, Serena says, didn't come easy. "She came out hitting so hard," she says. "She has so much power. It wasn’t easy today at all. This is a big moment for Venus and I. It’s a Grand Slam; we want to do the best we can.”
Serena next faces Roberta Vinci in the semifinal, who she has been able to easily beat in the past.
