Man Claims Self Defense After Shooting USF Football Player Three Times Following Road Rage Incident

It's unclear if Jovanni Jimenez will be charged for firing several rounds into Hassan Childs.

A college football player is in stable condition following a road-rage-fueled shooting in Florida over the weekend.

According to the Tampa Bay TimesUniversity of South Florida senior safety Hassan Childs was shot three times on Saturday night following a road-rage confrontation.

The newspaper additionally reported that the man, Jovanni Jimenez, 26, who shot Childs (pictured below) claimed that he was acting in self-defense after the football player pulled a gun on him first following their road-rage incident.

In fact, Jimenez himself called the police after the shooting, telling cops that he shot Childs in the upper arm and torso only after the defensive back allegedly pointed a gun at him, his wife and child.

"Thankfully Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured," USF head coach Charlie Strong said in a statement, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times. "There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time."

It's currently unclear what sparked their argument at the Eagles Point Apartments at Tampa Palms at about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday night or whether Jimenez will be charged will be filed. The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will determine the latter based on its investigation.

Jimenez has a criminal record, having been arrested in 2015 on domestic violence charges and also arrested in 2012 for opposing a police officer without violence. Childs doesn't have a criminal record.

Childs played in five games for the USF Bulls last season.
