Sloane Stephens Wins U.S. Open Title Beating Madison Keys

The young tennis star was ranked 957th in the world just last month.

Sloane Stephens has officially won her first Grand Slam title, defeating Madison Keys in the U.S. Open final.

Stephens defeated Keys, a close friend of her’s, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday (September 9). The victory followed a rapid rise after being out 11 months due to foot surgery.

The young tennis star was previously ranked 83rd in the world and joins Kim Clijsters as the only unseeded US Open women’s champions in the Open era, dating back to 1968. Stephens was ranked 957th in the world just a month ago.

"I should just retire now," Stephens joked after the match. "I told Maddie I'm never going to be able to top this. I mean, talk about a comeback."

Since losing at Wimbledon in July and exiting in her next match at Washington, the 24-year-old has gone 15-2 with her ranking soaring from the over 900 mark to what will be around 20th as of Monday.

"I mean, things just have to come together," Stephens said, "And the last six weeks, five weeks, they really have."

As the match ended, Stephens and Keys met center court and hugged for a while. They also spoke afterward when Sloane was presented with her $3.7 million winnings.

Congrats to Sloane Stephens! #BlackGirlMagic.
