Fiftieth Anniversary of Althea Gibson's 1957 U.S. Open Win

In 2007, former Mayor David Dinkins led the U.S. Open induction of Hall of Fame player Althea Gibson into the U.S. Open Court of Champions. Gibson was the first African-American tennis player to win the Wimbledon title in 1957 and she later went on to become a professional golf player and the first Black woman to join the LPGA. (Photo: Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)
