Most Cringeworthy Athlete Arrests

A look at sports stars' inexplicable acts.

San Francisco Linebacker Likely to Face Misdemeanor for False Bomb Threat - San Francisco 49ers' linebacker Aldon Smith is likely to face misdemeanor charges nearly two weeks after making a false bomb threat at Los Angeles International Airport. Initially, it was reported that Smith would be facing felony charges, but the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that the case has been referred to the city's District Attorney's Office for misdemeanor consideration, as reported by CBS Sports.  (Photo: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

No Fly Zone - Yelling out "bomb" in Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday got San Francisco 49ers linebacker/defensive end Aldon Smith arrested for false bomb threat charges to which he could potentially spend a year in prison for. Why anyone would scream "bomb" in an airport, especially during the post 9-11 era, is beyond us. But Smith isn't alone when it comes to athlete arrests that simply made us scratch our heads. Here, BET.com takes a look at the slips in judgement that made us cringe.(Photo: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Steelers Plaxico Burress Sued for Pitbull Attack - Plaxico Burress’ neighbor Gina Stasinos and her husband filed the lawsuit against Burress, claiming that his pitbull got loose and viciously attacked Gina in May while she walked by Burress’ home. Stasinos claims she suffered serious and permanent injuries during the attack and is suing for “unspecified damages.”   (Photo: Wylde / Splash News)

Gunplay Goes Wrong - An instrumental part of the New York Giants winning Super Bowl XLII in 2008, star wide receiver Plaxico Burress made national headlines of a completely different kind later that same year. Burress accidentally shot himself in the right thigh at a New York City nightclub and subsequently served nearly two years in prison on a firearms charge. Damn.(Photo: Wylde / Splash News)

Miguel Cabrera Was Joking About Bonus - It turns out that Miguel Cabrera wasn’t serious when he told teammate Max Scherzer on Wednesday that he was going to forgo his post-season bonus by not signing the necessary paperwork involved. On Thursday, ESPN reported that the All-Star slugger was only joking and will sign the forms needed to receive his part of the team’s bonus for reaching the postseason. (Photo: Leon Halip/Getty Images)

DU-Why? - Miguel Cabrera's February 2011 arrest on drunken driving was cringeworthy on epic proportions. Not only did he reportedly take a swig of scotch right in front of a Florida deputy, but he asked him, "Do you know who I am? I'm Miguel Cabrera." Athletes, take note — the 'Do you know who I am' line can never end well when used on the police. (Photo: Leon Halip/Getty Images)

O.J. Simpson - Hertz Rent-a-Car dropped O.J. Simpson as its pitchman amid reports that he and wife Nicole Brown Simpson were involved in domestic violence disputes in 1992. It turned out to be a good decision, as the former NFL star and actor was tried for the double murder of his ex-wife and her friend Ronald Goldman in June 1994. Although "Juice" was notoriously acquitted, he never got that look from Hertz again.(Photo: AP Photo/Julie Jacobson, Pool, File)

Las Vegas Shakedown - More than a decade after being found not guilty on two charges of murder, O.J. Simpson led a group of men who robbed two sports memorabilia owners at gunpoint during a hotel room break-in in Las Vegas back in September 2007. Simpson was found guilty on felony charges, including criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, assault, robbery and using a deadly weapon, and is currently serving 33 years in prison. Fully Loaded - What was former NBA player Darius Miles thinking when he tried to get a loaded gun past airport security at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport in 2011? Well, he wasn't thinking, and was subsequently arrested. An X-ray screening revealed the weapon. Of course it did! (Photo: Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Wild for the Night - It was the night before Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami back in 1999, and while most players were probably resting or going over last-minute game preparations, Atlanta Falcons free safety Eugene Robinson was infamously getting arrested for soliciting a prostitute. That woman he was offering $40 for sex with was actually an undercover Miami cop. Not the kind of bust he was expecting. The night before the Super Bowl, though, homie? Really? The Denver Broncos defeated the Falcons, 34-19. (Photo: Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

Nate Newton - Nate Newton, a former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman, was popped for trying to run a drug ring. He was busted in Louisiana in 2001 with 213 pounds of marijuana in his car.  Then, just six months later, while out on bond, he was arrested again and accused of hauling 175 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a car. Pound for Pound - In November 2001, former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton was arrested in Texas with 213 pounds of marijuana in his car. Five weeks later, he was arrested again, this time with 175 pounds of pot discovered during a traffic stop. Newton was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on drug trafficking charges. Where was the rationale? Maybe he thought he could drive faster with 38 pounds less weed the second time around. Cringeworthy indeed.(Photo: Robert Laberge /Allsport/Getty Images)

Did Jets Star Rub One Out in the Parking Lot? - TMZ obtained a Nov. 19 police report which claimed that a woman saw New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. masturbating inside his car in a Target parking lot in New Jersey. However, Kellen said he was just trying to smoke illegal synthetic marijuana, according to a statement he issued on Jan. 17. He was arrested and hit with drug charges for the fake pot.(Photo: Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

Feeling Myself - In December 2013, New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow was arrested for marijuana possession, but was also accused of publicly masturbating in his Cadillac Escalade in — get this — a Target parking lot in New Jersey. Winslow claimed that he was lost and looking for the nearest Boston Market restaurant. What? This Jet crashed and burned with this one. (Photo: Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

S----y Defense - Najeh Davenport's 2002 arrest puts the cringe in cringeworthy. The former Green Bay Packers fullback was arrested in July of that year for breaking into a Barry University dorm room and defecating in a woman's closet. Huh? You read right. The disgusting act spawned this infamous quote from Davenport, before he copped a plea deal giving him community service: "Where's the evidence? Where's the manure? I know I didn't do it — I just wanted to get it over with." Hey, Najeh, for future reference...dorms also have bathrooms.(Photo: stringer/NFL/Getty Images)

Gilbert Arenas Charged for Illegal Fireworks - Former Washington Wizards baller Gilbert Arenas was charged with possession of dangerous fireworks without a permit. The charges come as a result of his June 27 arrest, in which he was pulled over in California and police uncovered 100 pounds of fireworks.(Photo: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Man of Steel - Arguing over a bet debt with then-Washington Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton, Gilbert Arenas admitted to storing unloaded guns in his locker at the Verizon Center in December 2009. The decision violated NBA rules and Washington D.C.'s gun-control laws. By the next month, the NBA announced that it was suspending Arenas and Crittenton for the rest of the season. Arenas was sentenced to two years probation and 30 days in a halfway house. What's more cringeworthy than Arenas' arrest is that Crittenton is currently facing a murder and drug trial. Before the Wizards, the Washington franchise nickname was the Bullets. (Photo: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Riding Dirty - Almost like a scene out of a movie, then-Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested in September 2009 for speeding through the streets of Maryland on a Can-Am Spyder motorcyle while carrying two loaded guns and a loaded shotgun in a guitar case. West pleaded guilty to the traffic and weapons charges and was sentenced to electronic monitoring probation and 40 hours of community service. He would later admit that he was taking the powerful drug Seroquel, which treats bi-polar disorder, while driving that infamous night. (Photo: Harry How/Getty Images)
