Drop The Ball: Notable Sports-Related Mistakes in Movies

The facts weren't straight in these flicks.

Straight Outta Compton Has Sports-Related Mistake in the Opening Scene - Straight Outta Compton cleaned up in its opening weekend, raking in over $60 million. Keen sports fans, though, were able to spot an error in the movie's opening scene as Eazy-E (played by Jason Mitchell) is shown wearing a Chicago White Sox hat with "Sox" written in old English font. The problem with that is, according to reports, the scene was set in 1986 and the White Sox didn't switch to their old English font until 1991. Director F. Gary Gray shouldn't feel too bad about the mistake, though. Many movies have included sports-related errors in the past. Chadwick Boseman in 42 (2013) - Director Brian Helgeland must have seen something very special in Boseman to trust the relative-newcomer to play Jackie Robinson in his biopic of the baseball great. His instinct was correct — Boseman earned critical acclaim and even the approval of Robinson's widow Rachel for his performance.(Photo: AP Photo/Warner Bros. Pictures, D. Stevens)

42 - In 42, the 2013 movie about Jackie Robinson's life, the iconic slugger is hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Fritz Ostermueller. In reality, the pitch didn't hit Robinson and there was no evidence that he told Robinson, "You don't belong here and you never will," as shown in the film.(Photo: AP Photo/Warner Bros. Pictures, D. The Express - The 2008 movie told the story of Ernie Davis, who starred for Syracuse University before winning the Heisman Trophy and going on to be the No. 1 selection in the 1962 NFL Draft. The mistake the movie made was having him introduced during a game against the Chicago Bears, when he was actually introduced in a pre-season game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Davis never had a chance to play an NFL game because he tragically passed due to leukemia.(Photo: Universal Pictures)

Ali - It's certainly not the biggest mistake, but they got a fact wrong in the film about the famed Rumble in the Jungle bout between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Ali was announced out of the blue corner and Foreman out of the red corner, but it was actually the other way around.(Photo: Columbia Pictures)

Monica Wright and Quincy McCall - This love story even made the most macho of men want to fall in love. Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps's portrayals of Monica Wright and Quincy McCall in Love & Basketball were so spot on that, to this day, they both are credited majorly for their work in the film. Who knew sports and love could coincide so beautifully?(Photo: 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks)

Love & Basketball - The 2000 classic Love & Basketball had its fair share of mistakes, one of them being Monica (played by Sanaa Lathan) having teammates on her USC team wearing jersey numbers that are not allowed in the NCAA.(Photo: 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks)

Any Given Sunday - The 1999 hit movie Any Given Sunday had a laundry list of mistakes, including a scene in which an injured player is laid out on the field and refs are still measuring for a first down. In the NFL, an injured player would be tended to before the measurement is made and the league would never make the measurement with the injured player still on the field. Like Mike - The 2002 movie made a critical error in having the Toronto Raptors play two games against the same Los Angeles team at the Staples Center. In reality, an Eastern Conference team would only play a Western Conference team once on the road, not twice.(Photo: Twentieth Century Fox)

Remember the Titans - Another big sports movie...and another big factual error, as the Titans kick off the ball to start the championship game in the 2000 film and also kick it off to start the second half. In reality, their opponent would have kicked the ball off to start the second half.(Photo: Jerry Bruckheimer Films)
