The nine-year federal investigation into sports-doping, known as the BALCO case, will wind up with the sentencing of former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds on Friday. The prosecutorial effort netted 11 convictions, most prominently of Bonds and Olympic track star Marion Jones.
Over two weeks, prosecutors methodically worked to build a credible case that Barry Bonds lied to a federal grand jury in 2003 when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. They they called Bonds' orthopedic surgeon to the stand. They regretted it almost immediately.
