Just before signing to Bad Boy, Janelle Monáe's first official release was 2007's Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase). The album drew inspiration from science fiction movies such as Metropolis and Blade Runner. Her music told the story of an android named Cyndi Mayweather, who fell in love with a human. It was a critically acclaimed record because of the sophisticated themes that Janelle took on.
