Family Matters started in 1989 as a spinoff of the popular ABC show Perfect Strangers. The show was about a policeman, Carl Winslow, and an elevator operator, Harriette Winslow, and the family they were raising.

It wasn't until Jaleel White joined the cast as Steve Urkel, midway through the first season, that the show began to take off. Urkel's crush on Laura Winslow became one of the most epic romances on television.

Urkel's "Did I Do That" catch phrase and his alter ego Stefan Urquelle soon became staples of the show. Other characters, such as Urkel's cousin, Myrtle Urkel, and Waldo Faldo, would help Family Matters become one of the longest running African-American sitcoms of all time.
