Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel was the first black woman to win an Academy Award following her portrayal of “Mammy” in the classic 1939 film, Gone with the Wind. That feat wasn’t the only “first” in McDaniel’s career — she was also the first black woman to sing on the radio in America. As a result of her impact in the film and radio industry, McDaniel has two separate stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
