Last week’s election did not just result in Barack Obama being re-elected. In Colorado and Washington State, voters decided to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. What does this mean for the African-American community? Despite the fact that Black people and white people use and sell marijuana at roughly the same rate, Black people are arrested for marijuana three times as much as white people, seven times as much in New York City.

Will other states follow suit and legalize marijuana? How would America change if marijuana was legalized? Several reports claim that legalizing marijuana would save billions of dollars due to enforcement costs and bring in billions of dollars in tax revenue. Is marijuana more harmful than alcohol or tobacco? Would legalizing it lead to more addicts?

If prescription pills, many of which are addictive and have negative side effects, are legal, why isn’t marijuana?
