Interview: Marjorie Harvey Explains How She Dresses Denim Up and Down

The high-profile fashion blogger takes a moment to show us the versatility of denim.

There's a common misconception that denim — because it's ubiquitous and utilitarian — can't be glamorous. It can be high-end and of high quality. It can be luxurious. But glamorous...not so much. It's too much of a wardrobe staple for all that. Right?

Wrong.

Marjorie Harvey, a leading Black fashion blogger with a very real flair for fantasy, proves that denim is the farthest thing from basic. Like every great outfit, all it takes to elevate the fabric is a high/low mix and a little imagination. She knows that a pair of straight leg jeans can hold steady the giant poof of a cotton candy-blue faux fur coat (and that a slice at the knee keeps it playful while stacked platform shoes tip the whimsy scale). She understands that when it comes to the classic white blouse, there's no accent as great as a crown, no pants so prepared to hold court as those that are denim and covered, completely, in crystals. And she gets that sometimes glamour doesn't have to be in-your-face obvious; that there's something elegant about a cropped wide-leg, especially when paired with a thin-striped knit.

Great lighting and surrounding velvet decor always helps. But the personality of who wears these clothes must be considered, too. You just have to own the pull-it-off factor. Anyone can make denim seem glamorous. But when it comes to making denim party/fantasy appropriate, that's all you.

BET: Have you always been interested in fashion?
Marjorie Harvey: My love for fashion began at very early age. For as long as I can remember I've always loved putting together great looks that combine beautiful colors and lavish textures in a captivating way. Anyone who knew me in high school or in my early years often says they are not surprised by my present endeavors, namely my blog, The Lady Loves Couture. I definitely think blogs and Instagram have added to the popularity of street style fashion and photography.

You’re a staple at Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks — even Couture (which few are rarely invited to). Do you have any standout memories?
I feel very blessed to be one of the ones invited to attend these shows and private events. I love being able to see fashion up close and from the designer's perspective. My first show was Chanel. The standout show that I absolutely loved was Dolce & Gabbana's Alta Moda [collection].

What's your favorite fashion city?
Paris.

What would you cite as your favorite denim moment in hip-hop, R&B or fashion history?
Diana Ross's Diana album cover.

What's your all-time favorite denim piece in your collection?
My Current/Elliott the Fling are my absolute favorite pair of jeans!

What is your go-to denim brand?
Frame denim, I really like the fit and chic styles.

How do you mix and wear denim?
Not that long ago I paired a cropped denim Joe Jeans jacket with a layered feather Chanel skirt. It's fun to mix basic denim with high-fashion pieces.

How many pair of jeans do you own?
20.

Finish the sentence: Denim is...
Relaxed and comfortable.
