Like many young athletes, Daniel Gibson’s dream was to make it to the NBA. His parents. Byron and Cheryl, supported his goals and guided him with strong love and support throughout his childhood in Houston, Texas, in the shadow of his father’s college basketball days at the University of Houston. Gibson eventually became a star basketball player, leading Jones High School to a 31-4 record and the Texas Class 4A state title his senior year – which was the school's first state championship since 1965. A member of the National Honor Society, Gibson was a smart kid, graduating sixth out of 212 students in his class. His brains and skills on the court led him to Austin, where he played two seasons with the Longhorns at the University of Texas. With his NBA dreams close within reach, Daniel entered the draft after his sophomore season.
Having proven himself as one of the most promising young players out there, the Cleveland Cavaliers snagged Gibson in the second round of the NBA draft in 2006. With the chance to play alongside LeBron James, Daniel was given the opportunity to make a name for himself in professional basketball.
As a point guard for the Cavs, Gibson became a valuable member of the team, helping them reach the playoffs and earning him the All-Star Rookie Challenge MVP in 2008. Interrupted only by the occasional injury, Daniel had fulfilled his boyhood dream.
But for Daniel, the dream didn’t stop there. The product of a strong and stable 30-year marriage, Daniel had dreams of love and family as well. His parents nurtured him from an early age and, for him, a career in basketball was only a piece of the puzzle.
In early 2009, Daniel was interviewed on local Cleveland News Channel 5. When questioned about his love life, Daniel revealed he was single and said, “The only way I won’t be single is if Keyshia Cole called me today.” His crush on the R&B songstress and so called “Princess of Hip Hop Soul” made waves in the media and, thanks to having a shared stylist, Daniel was introduced to Keyshia. After a four-month romance over the phone, Daniel and Keyshia officially became an item.
In March 2010, Daniel and Keyshia welcomed a son, Daniel Jr., whom they call “DJ,” to the world. A little over a year later, Daniel and Keyshia made it official by getting married. Now a husband, father and professional NBA player, Daniel has made all of his dreams come true by finding the balance between love and career that his parents wished for him. With the determination that got him to the NBA, Daniel now strives to be the husband and father he has always hoped to be. He must support Keyshia as she balances the duties of being both a new mom and a musician while he works on being the player the Cavaliers need him to be for the 82 games of the NBA season. It’s not easy, but for Daniel, it’s worth it. Basketball has always been a passion, but now it’s time to put family first.
