Keyshia Cole Gibson has never been short of courage or determination. At age five, she displayed her natural gift for song at a school talent show after sneaking away from her adopted mother, Dr. Yvonne Cole, to participate. She ended up winning the whole competition. Keyshia eventually realized she needed to leave her native Oakland and move to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. Already backed by friend Tupac Shakur, Keyshia was determined to make her mark on R&B.
Shortly after moving to L.A., Keyshia collaborated with artists such as D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Tone and Messy Marv. She was soon discovered by A&M Records executive Ron Fair, who heard her sing and signed her the night of her 21st birthday. For the next three years she poured her heart and soul into her first album, The Way It Is. A lifetime of heartbreak, determination and survival went into the album and the effort paid off. When The Way It Is dropped, it debuted at number six on the Billboard 200, selling 89,000 copies in its first week. Keyshia had arrived on the music scene.
In her career, Keyshia has recorded two number-one R&B-hip hop albums and seven number-one singles, two of which went platinum. In 2007, her second album, Just Like You, debuted at number one on Billboards R&B-hip hop chart and number two nationally. On that album alone there were three number-one songs. The album was groundbreaking and earned Keyshia four Grammy nominations, including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance as well as an American Music Award nomination. In 2008, her third release, A Different Me, debuted at number-one on the R&B chart.
But the road to success was not easy for Keyshia. The complex and tumultuous childhood and family life she had experienced was a challenge, but were ultimately no match for Keyshia’s determination. With the instincts of a survivor, her strong spirit and determination have gotten Keyshia to where she is today. Her struggles with her biological mother, Frankie, and sister, Neffe, were well documented in BET’s docudrama Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is.
An independent woman, Keyshia Cole Gibson is a self-made woman who has survived and succeeded against all odds. In 2009, Keyshia met NBA player Daniel Gibson and fell in love. A kindred spirit, Daniel was driven and had made his own career success in professional basketball. Keyshia has said that Daniel’s strong faith in God and love for his family drew her to him. With her background, Keyshia craved the stability and support Daniel had to offer. In March 2010, Daniel and Keyshia welcomed a son, Daniel Jr., to the world. A year later, Daniel and Keyshia were married.
