Singer Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Janelle Monae dreamed of becoming a performer from an early age, studying musical theater in New York before moving to Atlanta to focus on recording. After meeting Big Boi of Outkast, she formed a creative collective called The Wondaland Arts Society and signed with Sean “Diddy” Combs. The Grammy-nominated neo-funk diva is famous for her distinctive hairstyles, her futuristic artistic concepts, and for infectious, danceable jams like “Tightrope.”
