Margaret Avery

Actress Getting her start on the stage, Margaret Avery made her big screen debut in 1972. She's had a long-lasting career starring in everything from blaxploitation films to hit TV shows. In 1986, the actress/singer was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category for her performance as Shug Avery in The Color Purple. The San Diego native co-star's in the BET original drama Being Mary Jane.
