Marvin Gaye

Singer Marvin Gaye (born Marvin Gay Jr.), a star of Motown Records, scored his first major album success in 1964 via a collection of duets with Mary Wells.  He followed that formula to greateffect with his Tammi Terrell collaborations "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "You're All I Need to Get By."  While 1973's sexually suggestive "Let's Get It On" was a commercial smash, he shook up popular music with What's Going On, an album that highlighted social ills over romance that highlighted social ills over romance and partying.  Gaye battled cocaine addiction and depression before famously being shot to death by his reverend father in 1984.
